If all I have is a SATA DVD drive (and all the other bits that make up my new build, obviously) Vista surely isn't going to get a chance to start installing if the DVD drive cannot boot (because it is SATA and needs drivers!). Tried to go to HP for a driver and according to HP Vista comes with the driver.. go figure.. I'll have to figure that one out later... Some other odd ones I have run across: My Office 2007 Ultimate would not install after a certain point. Kept looking for a file on the disk and stopped.

You obviously need somewhere to install the recovery program unless you run it from a live bootable but subsequently neglected to pay attention to windows which somehow suddenly decided it might be a good idea to format that other drive.

I'm looking to install Vista on a 27GB spare HD that I have hangin around in order to test my motherboard, amongst other things, before I install it on my day to day that happens to work great with XP. The Vista upgrade advisor mentioned a couple of things that I want to check before I go and tank my current OS.

I have tried using the other optical drive and there is no difference. The installation disc is clean and free of scratches. I am at my wit's end! Installing an OS should not be this difficult...but apparently I am either missing something or I have a flaky Vista disk. Please advise! Thanks.

It did, in fact, see all three logical drives (all on the same HD and all on separate partitions), and I was able to direct Setup to install Vista on the V: drive.
